Color Printing for Students

There is a letter-size color laser printer available to students in W-205. It is only useable from the PC’s in that lab.

It is managed by our PaperCut system and the cost per side is $.10. That is 4x’s the cost of a B&W print which is $.05 per sheet whether single or double sided.

Feel free to direct students who ask for color printing to this lab. A sign will be posted on the printer indicating the cost of the print.

We will not be “advertising” the availability of this printer, but we will provide the information to any student that asks via the help desk.

No printers networked on a public computer

Occasionally students discover that there are no printers installed on the machine that they are using. According to MIS, this is because the printers are installed with a network group policy and this occasionally fails and does not install the printers correctly. Restarting the machine will fix this problem.

Printer error message: Change paper size or type...

If the first floor printers are throwing an error message prompting you to change the size or type of paper before printing a document that's been released, check the Settings - Paper Menu - Paper Size/Type menu and make sure Letter and Plain Paper are selected for the tray listed in the error message.

A recent ticket to MIS revealed that this setting can be accidentally changed by students--and, luckily, easily changed back.

Printing from Chegg eBook

Students should use internet explorer to print pages of an eBook purchased from Chegg.   Using Chrome Browser prints a dark background causing the page to be unreadable and wasting toner.

Using Print-Friendly to print webpages

Recently when students ask for help printing "clean" webpages without ads, images, and awkward formatting, I've been recommending they use the Print Friendly and PDF tool at https://www.printfriendly.com/. It presents a printer friendly version of a webpage by removing ads and any unnecessary formatting and spacing, allows the removal of portions of text, and also offers an option to save the webpage content as a pdf.
